Searching for elite dermatology in Chicago can be confusing when every practice promises premium care. Words like premium, elite, and concierge describe a service model, not a medically recognized level of quality.
High-quality dermatologic care rests on something different. It comes from appropriate clinician qualifications, an accurate evaluation, evidence-based recommendations, informed consent, shared decision-making, and reliable follow-up. Amenities, pricing, or concierge services do not by themselves establish better medical care or outcomes.
At Advanced Dermatology and Aesthetic Medicine in Chicago’s South Loop, that is the standard we hold ourselves to. Here is what dermatology and advanced skin care look like in our practice, described plainly.
What “Premium” Does and Does Not Mean
A longer appointment, a comfortable office, or a curated skincare line can make care more convenient. None of those things guarantees a better diagnosis, a safer procedure, or a better result.
What matters is the process. Your visit should include a careful history, an examination, clear communication about your options, and dependable follow-up.
Who Evaluates and Treats You
Our physicians are Monica Rani, MD, FAAD, and Stavonnie Patterson, MD, FAAD, both board-certified dermatologists.
Dr. Rani completed a combined internal medicine and dermatology residency and is board certified in dermatology.
Both physicians have prior faculty experience at Northwestern. Sydney Freedman, PA-C sees medical dermatology patients.
Board certification reflects completed medical training, a dermatology residency, and a recognized board examination. It is a meaningful qualification, but it does not guarantee any particular outcome.
Continuing education and professional society participation help our physicians stay informed about evolving research. Even so, each recommendation is weighed on its own evidence quality, FDA status, risks, alternatives, and fit for the individual patient.
Led by our dermatologists, our aestheticians complement medical treatment with physician-curated services and skincare for enhanced results. Under dermatologist direction, our practice offerschemical peels, microneedling, laser treatments, and HydraFacial®.
Licensed aestheticians provide services within their Illinois esthetics scope. Medical procedures are performed by a physician or by appropriately trained personnel under the physician evaluation, delegation, and oversight Illinois law requires.
How We Reach a Diagnosis
Reaching a diagnosis may require a history, an examination, dermoscopy, laboratory testing, patch testing, trichoscopy, or a biopsy. Dermoscopy is a noninvasive tool that can help a trained clinician evaluate a lesion and decide between monitoring and biopsy.
Noninvasive assessment tools such as dermoscopy are adjuncts. They cannot definitively confirm or exclude skin cancer. A suspicious lesion may require biopsy and microscopic examination, and occasionally additional sampling or review, to establish the diagnosis.
Every biopsy creates a small wound and may leave a scar. Careful technique and wound care can make scarring less noticeable, but no biopsy is scar-free. Pathology results sometimes change the treatment plan, and additional treatment may be necessary.
A careful initial assessment may reduce avoidable treatment, but some conditions require testing, treatment trials, or a revised diagnosis over time. No practice can promise a definitive answer at the first visit.
Skin Cancer Monitoring, Matched to Your Risk
We do not recommend one screening schedule for everyone. Examination frequency is individualized based on personal and family history, prior skin cancer, mole patterns, immune status, sun exposure, and clinician judgment.
Total body photography or sequential digital dermoscopy may be considered for selected patients at increased melanoma risk. These tools supplement clinical examinations rather than replace them, and they cannot monitor every lesion. A lesion with concerning features should be biopsied rather than watched when delay could compromise the diagnosis.
Do not wait for a scheduled visit if something changes. Seek prompt evaluation for a new, changing, itching, bleeding, painful, or nonhealing spot.
Medical, Surgical, and Cosmetic Care Under One Roof
Offering medical, surgical, and cosmetic care in one location provides convenient, comprehensive treatment when your skin needs overlap. However, outcomes always depend on an accurate diagnosis, your overall health, treatment adherence, and proper follow-up. Because many skin conditions are chronic, individual responses, recurrence rates, and treatment burdens vary.
1. Medical and Systemic Treatments
For eligible patients with moderate-to-severe psoriasis or atopic dermatitis, we may discuss FDA-approved biologics or other systemic therapies.
- Customized Selection:Recommendations depend on condition severity, prior treatments, general health, pregnancy plans, and required monitoring.
- Expectations:Side effects differ by medication, and chronic inflammatory conditions can still relapse despite appropriate care.
2. Cosmetic and Injectable Options
Cosmetic treatments are elective, self-pay procedures designed for aesthetic goals rather than physical health. We proceed only after discussing all alternatives, including no treatment.
- Physician-Directed Injectables:Options includeBotox® and Dysport®along withdermal fillerslike Restylane® and Sculptra®.
- Off-Label Disclosures:FDA approvals are specific to the product, indication, and area treated. If a proposed treatment involves an off-label use, we will explicitly discuss this during your plan review.
- PRP Therapy:Used for select forms of hair loss (such as male and female pattern hair loss). Note that dermatologic PRP is not FDA-approved and protocol evidence varies. We counsel patients on uncertain benefits, costs, necessary repeat sessions, and standard injection risks (like bruising and infection).
3. Laser, Device, and Resurfacing Care
Chemical peels, laser treatments, and microneedling can improve signs of sun damage, uneven pigmentation, rough texture, and fine lines.
- Realistic Outcomes:These devices do not erase all sun damage, halt natural aging, or prevent future skin cancer. Ongoing sun protection and maintenance are required.
- Skin of Color Considerations:Higher pigment levels carry an increased risk of post-procedure pigment changes. Device choices and settings are carefully tailored to your skin tone.
- Treatment Planning:Newer technology is not automatically superior, and combining treatments is not inherently safer or more effective. Any combined regimen, session count, downtime expectation, or sequencing is based strictly on your diagnosis, skin type, and safety evidence.
Safety and Post-Procedure Guidelines
Injectable and device procedures are generally well-tolerated, but common side effects include localized bruising, swelling, and redness.
Important Safety Warnings
- Filler Risks:Rare but severe complications include accidental injection into a blood vessel (vascular occlusion), which can block blood flow and lead to tissue damage, vision loss, or stroke.
- Botulinum Toxin Warning:Toxin products carry a boxed warning for potential spread of toxin effects beyond the treatment site.
- When to Call Our Office:Contact us promptly for signs of infection, persistent bleeding despite firm pressure, worsening pain, or localized eyelid/brow droop.
WHEN TO SEEK IMMEDIATE EMERGENCY CARE
Go to an emergency room or seek urgent care immediately if you experience:
- Skin Changes After Fillers:Skin turning white, gray, blue, or mottled, or escalating or unusual pain.
- Vision and Neurological Symptoms:Sudden vision changes, one-sided facial or limb weakness, confusion, or speech difficulty.
- Airway and Respiratory Issues:Rapidly progressive swelling of the tongue or throat, or trouble breathing or swallowing.
- Severe Rashes:A widespread, painful rash accompanied by fever, blistering, skin peeling, or involvement of the eyes, mouth, or genitals.
Note:Individual results and duration of results may vary. Outcomes are not guaranteed.
Skincare Products, Described Plainly
Our office carries the ADAM skincare line, curated by our dermatologists. A recommended regimen is based on your diagnosis, goals, sensitivities, and treatment plan, not on branding.
Marketing terms like medical-grade do not by themselves establish that a product works better. Product benefits are formulation-specific, often modest, and variable between patients.
Retinol products may gradually soften the appearance of some fine lines. They can also cause dryness, peeling, or irritation. Dark circles and puffiness have multiple causes and may not improve with a topical product.
Topical retinoids, including over-the-counter retinol, should be avoided during pregnancy. If you are pregnant or trying to conceive, stop these products and discuss alternatives with your obstetric and dermatology clinicians.
Insurance and Costs
Many medical dermatology visits can be billed to insurance, and coverage varies by insurer and plan. Patients should confirm network status, coverage, prior-authorization requirements, and expected out-of-pocket costs directly with their insurer, including possible separate pathology charges. Cosmetic services are self-pay and are not billed to insurance.
Ourinsurance pagelists the plans we participate with. The insurer, not a practice website, is the final authority on what your plan covers.
