What is Eczema?
Eczema tends to flare in the winter months and we here at Advanced Dermatology and Aesthetic Medicine can help de-stigmatize Eczema and shine a light on what it is, how to treat it, and empower everyone young and old to feel comfortable in their skin.
Eczema (eg-zuh-MUH) is the name for a group of conditions that cause the skin to become itchy, inflamed, or have a rash-like appearance. Over 31 million Americans have some form of eczema that can begin at any stage of life.
There are different types of eczema which can range from mild to severe. Some common types of eczema are:
atopic dermatitis
contact dermatitis
dyshidrotic eczema
nummular eczema
seborrheic dermatitis
and stasis dermatitis
While the exact cause of eczema is unknown, eczema is not contagious. Eczema is a result of an irritant or an allergen from outside or inside the body “switching on” your immune system, resulting in inflammation. It is this inflammation that causes the symptoms common to most types of eczema.
