Should I Wear Sunscreen Everyday? Yes! Here’s Why…
Chicago… it’s getting warmer outside and we know you can’t wait to get outside! Before you soak up the sun, here are some tips for staying safe while enjoying the outdoors!
May is Skin Cancer Awareness month. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S. with over 5 million cases diagnosed every year. Sunscreen should be worn by everyone, everyday, keeping in mind that anyone can get skin cancer regardless of age, gender, or race.
What Is SPF?
Sun protection factor (SPF), is a measure of how much UV radiation is required to create a sunburn. Meaning, the higher your SPF, the more protection you’re getting from the sun. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends you wear a water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen that has a SPF 30 or higher for any outdoor activity.
Choosing The Right Sunscreen
Consumers have many choices when it comes to picking the right sunscreen for their skin. And many deciding factors are what you’re doing, where you’re located, and where you’re applying the sunscreen. An overall rule of thumb is to choose a sunscreen that you are going to use!
There are two types of sunscreen, both are safe and effective options:
Physical or Mineral Sunscreen: Physical or mineral sunscreens use titanium dioxide and zinc oxide to block the sun’s rays before by deflecting them away from your skin.
Chemical Sunscreen: Use avobenzone or octisalate that absorb the UV rays before they can damage your skin.

How To Properly Use Sunscreen
After your skin is clean and dry, apply your sunscreen and then wait at least 30 minutes to go out into the sun. Once in the sun, sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours and always reapply if you’re sweating or swimming. Sunscreen should be worn everyday of the year, even if it's snowing, cloudy, sunny, or raining.
Skin exams are recommended every year and may be recommended more frequently based on your personal medical history. Schedule your appointment with one of our providers today to help determine your risk and let us help keep you safe!
