Chemical Peels

What Are Chemical Peels?

A chemical peel uses a chemical solution to remove and exfoliate the dull layers of skin, revealing the more youthful skin underneath.  This is done by applying an acid to the skin which lowers the pH allowing for faster skin cell turnover. Chemical peels can reduce or improve fine lines and wrinkles, acne, scars, uneven skin coloring, and other skin imperfections. Different chemicals determine the depth of your peel and the type of skin condition treated.

A chemical peel is a great solution for the following skin concerns:

  • Sun-damage

  • Superficial facial wrinkling

  • Uneven skin tone, blotchiness, sunspots, and brown spots

  • Dull appearing skin

  • Scarring

  • Acne

Benefits Of Chemical Peels

Chemical peels help to exfoliate the skin which can help improve a variety of skin concerns. The benefits of chemical peels are to help even skin tone, improve skin texture, and brighten the appearance of the skin.

What To Expect After A Chemical Peel?

The amount of peeling and the timing of each peel are different. You may not be able to see the peeling. If and when it is visible, peeling typically begins 2-4 days afterward and can last for 3-5 days.  You may also experience some mild tightness, redness, or itching. It is VERY IMPORTANT that you are diligent with your skincare routine afterward for best results and to avoid unwanted side effects. Your provider will review your skincare routine with you after the treatment but here is what to expect:

  • ALWAYS keep the skin moist with a gentle moisturizer throughout the day for 5-7 days after the peel

  • For AT LEAST the next week, apply sunscreen with at least a SPF30 daily with reapplication every 2-4 hours

  • Use gentle cleansers, avoid scrubs

  • Do NOT peel, pick or scratch any skin that has begun to peel.  This could result in scarring and permanent discoloration of the skin

  • Do NOT have any other facial treatments or procedures for at least 2 weeks after having the peel

  • Wait for 3-5 days after your peel to restart any retinoid creams

What Are The Side Effects Of Chemical Peels?

Though chemical peels are minimally invasive treatments, they do not come without risk. Reducing the risk of side effects will be discussed during your consultation for a chemical peel.  Some potential side effects of chemical peels include:

  • Redness

  • Scabbing

  • Swelling

  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark spots)

FAQs About Chemical Peels

  • There are many chemical peels on the market. Chemical peels are categorized by the depth they penetrate in the skin, superficial, medium, and deep. Depending on the depth of the peel, this will determine the amount of downtime you experience. At Advanced Dermatology and Aesthetic Medicine, we will discuss which peel is best for you given your treatment goals.

  • Chemical peels are applied in the office and take about 30 minutes. This time will include photographs, skin preparation, application of the chemical peel, post-treatment, and thorough education on how to care for your skin in the coming days post-chemical peel.

  • You and your provider will review how to prepare for your chemical peel. Preparation by the patient prior to receiving their peel is very important as these steps help to reduce the risk of unwanted side effects post-chemical peel. You should avoid tanning (fake or real) 2 weeks before treatment, stop all retinoids, glycolic washes, benzoyl peroxide, and salicylic acid washes 5 days before your treatment, and come to your appointment with a clean face.
